Police in Kampala have confirmed the recovery of an AK-47 rifle and arrested a suspect following an attempted robbery at a local bar in Kitgum District.
During the weekly security briefing at the Police Headquarters in Naguru on Monday, 1st September, 2025, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rusoke Kituuma explained that the incident happened recently (time/day not specified) when an armed man attacked a group of travelers at the bar.
The police reported that the suspect, armed with an AK-47 rifle, ordered the victims to hand over their smartphones. However, in an unexpected turn of events, the travelers resisted, overpowered the attacker, and disarmed him before contacting local authorities.
“We commend the bravery of the victims who put their safety at risk to stop a dangerous suspect. Their quick action helped us recover the weapon and arrest the attacker,” ACP Kituuma stated.
Police officers responded quickly, recovering the firearm and taking the suspect into custody. Investigations indicated that the rifle is likely one of several stolen in recent months, which is a growing concern for security agencies across the country.
ACP Kituuma mentioned that investigations into the incident in Kitgum and other firearm-related crimes are ongoing, especially cases involving stolen police weapons.
“The Uganda Police Force remains dedicated to public safety, transparency, and justice. All suspects will face the legal system based on the evidence we gather,” he said.
Authorities have urged the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities, particularly those involving illegal firearms.
