Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Jacobs Baiyewu Oludotun, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.

According to an announcement by his family, Oludotun died on Wednesday, September 16th, 2026.

His son, Jacobs Olusoji, announced the death in a statement shared on social media, describing the veteran actor as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle.

The family said they were announcing his passing “with gratitude to God for a life well lived” and referred to him as “The Lion of Lufodo.” They also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect the family’s privacy as they mourn.

Oludotun was one of the most recognisable faces of Nigeria’s film and theatre industry, with a career spanning theatre, television and film.

Born on July 11th, 1942, Oludotun trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London before working in British theatre and television and later becoming a major figure in Nigeria’s emerging film industry.

Over the years, Oludotun appeared in numerous Nigerian and international productions and became known for his commanding screen presence and versatility as an actor.

He also built a career beyond acting, working in film production and theatre alongside his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva. The couple were associated with the Lufodo Group and its performing arts training work.

Oludotun received several honours during his career, including the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) for his contribution to Nigerian arts and culture.

His death brings to an end a career that stretched across generations and helped connect Nigeria’s theatre tradition with its modern film industry.

Tributes are expected to continue coming in from colleagues, filmmakers, actors and audiences who grew up watching his work.

The family has not announced funeral arrangements.
