Medical logistics drone flights have begun to improve the delivery of essential medical supplies and transport laboratory samples from hard-to-reach island communities.
Dr. Charles Ayume, the Minister of State for Health in charge of Primary Health Care, launched the initiative on October 27th, 2026, with a flight from Butabika to Koome, onward to Kalangala Town Council, before returning to Butabika.
The drone delivered essential medical supplies to island health facilities and transported laboratory samples back for testing. The initiative aims to address transportation challenges in remote communities, support timely diagnosis, and improve access to healthcare services.
Dr. Ayume said the flights would help assess the feasibility of integrating drone transport into the existing Integrated National Sample Transport Network.
“Evidence from these flights will inform decisions on how drone transport can be integrated into the existing Integrated National Sample Transport Network, strengthening timely and reliable sample transportation from hard-to-reach communities,” Dr. Ayume said.
The initiative marks a step towards exploring innovative healthcare logistics solutions, with the potential to strengthen medical supply delivery, improve laboratory sample transportation, and enhance healthcare services for island communities.
