The Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL), government officials and project stakeholders have held a groundbreaking ceremony at Ntinda Substation for the 400kV Karuma–Tororo Transmission Line and associated substations, marking a significant step towards strengthening Uganda’s electricity transmission network.
Speaking at the ceremony, the UETCL Board Chairperson, Kwame Ejalu said the project would improve electricity supply to Eastern Uganda and the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area while enhancing the country’s participation in regional power trade.
“Power infrastructure investments are key to poverty reduction and economic transformation,” Ejalu said, highlighting the project’s contribution to Uganda’s development ambitions.
Sweden’s Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Anna-Maria Olsson, celebrated the decade-long partnership between Uganda and Sweden in developing critical electricity transmission infrastructure.
She described the project as more than a transmission investment, calling it “a foundation for future growth, prosperity and opportunity.”
The transmission line is expected to facilitate the delivery of electricity generated by Karuma Hydropower Plant, which has an installed capacity of 600 megawatts, to communities, businesses and industries that depend on reliable power.
The Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Dr. Monica Musenero, described the project as a key backbone for Uganda’s industrialisation and socio-economic transformation.
She urged local leaders in project-affected areas to take ownership of the infrastructure and ensure its protection during construction and after completion.
