Police are investigating an incident where Denis Sseluli, who was carrying Ugx 28m in an envelope, lost it to the mob on William Street in Kampala.

SCP Fred Enanga, the Uganda Police Spokesperson, told the media during a weekly security brief at Naguru Police Headquarters on Monday, February 12, 2024, that the mob stole the money from Sseluli on February 9, 2024, at around 5 p.m. after the envelope containing the money got torn and the cash was scattered on the streets.

“People have lost a sense of humanity and respect for others. On February 9, 2024, there was a simple robbery along Willian Street around 5 p.m. where one SSebuli James was carrying 28 million in an envelope, and of course the envelope gave way and the whole of the 28 million landed on the street,” he said.

Enanga added that instead of people helping Ssebuli gather his money, they instead picked it up and ran away.

“By the time police came, they managed to arrest two suspects and recover only 897,000 shillings out of the 28 million,” he added.

He urged the public to always get escorts from the Central Police Station (CPS) in case they were transporting large amounts of money. According to him, an escort costs Ugx 20,000 only.

Enanga also cautioned business persons who prefer to transport large sums of money in an unsecured manner against such movements, as there are always leakages.

However, according to Enanga, the footage of the people who robbed Sseluli was recorded, and the police are continuing to investigate the matter.

According to police reports, a similar incident where onlookers picked money from a businessman occurred at Kajansi after it poured down, and later on, no one saw where it disappeared to.

At the beginning of February 2024, in Kapchorwa, a man was transporting Ugx 189m on a motorcycle, and a group of thugs riding on a motorcycle knocked him, grabbed the money, and left him helpless.
