Three Held in Napak over Trafficking, Police Rescues Five Girls

Police in Napak district have arrested three parents accused of trafficking their own children to go and work as sex workers in Busia town.

They were arrested during an intelligence-led operation conducted by the police following a tip-off from the community.

ASP Kenneth Akena, the officer in charge of Napak police station, said they intercepted five girls from Iriiri village on July 10th, 2023, at around 11:00 a.m. while they were on their way to Busia town.

Akena adds that their parents have been arrested by the Police after it was established that they were aware of their children’s movement to Busia to engage in prostitution. They are currently being held at Napak Police Station.

“These girls were intercepted while walking to Olilim trading center, Katakwi District, where they had planned to board a bus to Busia to work as sexual workers,” said ASP Akena.

Police said the locals first reported the matter to Napak RDC Denis Okori, who immediately alerted police to intervene.

The intercepted girls later confessed that two of them had previously worked in Busia as sex workers; therefore, they had returned to come and take their siblings along with them.
