Police has arrested 54 suspects in an operation conducted in the savanna region targeting individuals involved in cattle theft.
The police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma, while addressing the media on December 23, 2024 at the police headquarters Naguru, stated that the operation was conducted in areas like Nakaseke, Luwero, and Nakasongola emerging as the most affected areas.
“This operation followed theft of over 460 animals from those areas. Some of the suspects we have been arresting are former inmates in prisons, they go to prisons, serve short sentences, return and begin from where they stopped,” Rusoke said.
Rusoke added that some of these suspects automatically benefited from bail privileges.
Other suspects who were arrested, were found with the bail papers therefore the police are fighting a war of repeated offenders.
Since November 2024, over 460 animals have been reported stolen in these districts, but authorities have successfully recovered 352.
