Police in Gomba district have arrested a 20-year-old male for gruesomely murdering his grandfather in cold blood using a machete.

The arrest occurred on July 12, 2024, at around 11:00 p.m. in Mawuki village, Kabulasoke sub-county, Gomba district.

The police have identified the suspect as Expert Sebuliba, a grandson of Henry Mutumba (deceased), a 55-year-old coffee grower and resident of Mawuki village in Gomba district.

According to the police, Sebuliba, along with three other accomplices identified as Abbas Mukibi, aged 22 years, January, aged 23 years, and Brian, aged 21 years, all residents of Mawuki village, murdered the victim in the wee hours of Sunday, July 7, 2024.

Upon police intorrogation on July 13, 2024, Sebuliba revealed that he, along with the three culprits, were the masterminds behind the murder of his grandfather.

’’We were not going to kill my grandfather, but we were only going to injure him. However, when he recognized us, we decided to kill him because we knew he was going to report us to the police. We first tied him with a rope, beat him up, then later used a machete and a mortar to kill him, and afterwards, we stole the money that he had gotten after selling off his coffee beans,” Sebuliba disclosed.

Robert Kigozi, the LC I Chairman of Mawuki West, said that after the culprits gruesomely murdered the victim, they stole his money and sacks of coffee beans and ran away.

He, however, said that since they were in a hurry, they left behind a trail of coffee beans on the way because one of the coffee sacks had a hole, which led the locals to the criminals’ rental house, where the locals ordered them to open up and arrest them. However, Brian escaped and is on the run.

’’The coffee beans that went dropping on the way are what we followed and caught these criminals; however, it is so sad that such heinous acts were done by our own children,’’ Kigozi revealed.

Kigozi added that when the locals entered this rental house, it had two pairs of shoes that belonged to Mutumba and were blood stained.

’’Police in Bukandula and Kanoni fired gunshots in the air at around 11:00 p.m. when the locals were beating up Sebuliba and his accomplices, and during this scuffle, Brian escaped,’’ Kigozi disclosed.

He further called upon the locals to report Brain to the police once he is seen anywhere and urged the youth to stop engaging in such heinous acts but rather start working and live decently.
