Gov’t Reaffirms Commitment to Improve Roads in Kampala City

The government has announced plans to improve the status of roads within Kampala City.

This was revealed on Friday, July 28, 2023, by the Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs Minister, Hajjat Minsa Kabanda.

The Minister, who was accompanied by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director, Dorothy Kisaka, was on an impromptu tour to ascertain the status of roads within the city.

She said the government is committed to providing the city with efficient and well-maintained roads.

The duo conducted an inspection tour of various roads within the city to assess the progress and quality of ongoing road rehabilitation works.

“Our aim is to prioritise environmental concerns by keeping Kampala roads litter-free in order to promote the city’s beauty and overall public health while focusing on maintaining clean surroundings and proper waste disposal,” Minister Kabanda emphasised.

Kampala city roads rehabilitation project, under the African Development Bank (ADB) projects, is undertaking the task of constructing over 69 kilometres of roads with smoother and more efficient transport routes for citizens.

Currently, progress on Kabega Road, Makindye, is at 80% completion. Works on this stretch include the installation of drainage systems, the laying of asphalt, and the building of walkways, all aiming to enhance safety and convenience for pedestrians and motorists alike.

In Nakawa Division, the team toured Portbell Road, Spring Road, and Old Port Bell Road, which also revealed significant work in progress.

In the Industrial Area, 5th Street, 6th Street, 7th Street, and 8th Street are slated for rehabilitation.

The Mayor of Nakawa Division, Paul Mugambe, highlighted the positive impact these developments will have on the community, while Makindye Division’s Mayor, Ali Mulyanyama, underscored how the improved infrastructure would enhance the residents’ livelihoods.

The contractor is currently conducting forward maintenance work to address existing issues before actual reconstruction begins.
