School Children Killed in a Hit-and-Run in Kenya

Six school-going children have been killed on the spot by a speeding car in Kyoani on Kitui-Kibwezi Road in Kenya.

This incident happened at 6:20 am in the wee hours of September 13, 2024, near the Wiitu Shopping Centre as the kids were heading to school.

According to preliminary reports, the children were killed by a speeding Toyota Probox car that was heading to Kibwezi and was heading to Kitui; however, it lost control, veered off the road, hit the six kids, and they died on the spot.

According to the locals, the Toyota Probox car was coming from Kibwezi and was heading to Kitui at a high speed; however, when it reached Kyoani, it lost control, veered off the road to the pavement, knocked down the six kids, and the driver drove off.

According to locals, among the dead kids were three from the same family.

‘’The driver of the Toyota Probox was at fault, and it is so sad we have lost such innocent souls due to reckless driving. However, after killing these kids, he drove off but was later apprehended by police,” the locals revealed.

They added that three pupils from Kyoani Primary School and three others were students at Kyoabi Mixed Day Secondary School, while the primary school kids included a boy and a girl in Grade Three and a Grade Six girl.

During an interview with journalists, Ithitha Deputy County Commissioner Vincent Loctary Lomachary confirmed the incident and revealed that the bodies of the deceased have been taken to Mutomo Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examinations as police investigations have been launched to find out the cause of this accident.

Lomachary urged motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution on the newly paved road of Kitui-Kibwezi, which has caused a rise in fatal accidents, mostly due to speeding and carelessness on both parties.
