Police have arrested more than 30 suspected criminals behind the recent street attacks within Kampala.

The group was arrested during the ongoing intelligence-led operations targeting criminal dens in the Kapela, Kimbejja, and Kyaliwajala areas of Kira municipality.

ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Spokesperson of the Kampala Metropolitan Police, said on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, that the operations were conducted on the nights of May 27th and 28th.

“The individuals are currently detained at Kira Division Police on allegations of unlawful possession of suspected narcotic substances, specifically marijuana,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.

He said that, in addition to the above, CCTV camera operators successfully identified two individuals assaulting members of the public.

“One of the suspects, Mutebi Shafic, was arrested in Namugongo Agenda 2000 after hitting a person with a stone. Shafic was apprehended with the stone used in the assault,” Owoyesigyire said.

He said the victim was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for first aid, and their details will be provided once they recuperate.

Police vowed to continue with the current crackdown operations in Kira Municipality, with a dedicated focus on eradicating crime in the area.
