Uganda Police have arrested four suspects following a violent pre-dawn raid on Bugoye sub-county Police Station in Kasese district, where a group of armed attackers reportedly attempted to seize a police officer’s firearm.
According to a statement issued by the police, the attack occurred on Thursday, October 1st, 2026, at about 2:00 AM when approximately six people armed with pangas stormed the police facility.
ASP Elly Maate, the Police Spokesperson for Rwenzori East Region said the officer on duty resisted the attackers and shot one of them in the leg. The injured suspect reportedly fled the scene but was later found dead a short distance from the station.
“The officer on duty fiercely resisted the raid and shot one of the attackers in the leg. While the injured suspect managed to flee the scene, his body was later discovered meters away. The body has been moved to the mortuary for a postmortem examination, and his identity remains unconfirmed,” Maate said.
He added that four suspects have since been arrested in connection with the attack using the K9.
Police identified the suspects as Simon Irumba, Abson Kiiza, George Kadama and Lenaxi Baluku.
“They have been identified as Irumba Simon, Kiiza Abson, Kadama George, and Baluku Lenaxi. Evidence recovered a panga used during the raid was recovered by officers at the crime scene,” the statement read in part.
Officers also recovered a panga believed to have been used during the raid, which has been secured as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police are continuing to pursue other suspects believed to have escaped into the surrounding community. Investigators are also working to establish the motive behind the targeted attack on the police facility.
Authorities have appealed to residents to provide information that could assist in identifying and locating the remaining suspects.
Police noted that security forces remain on alert and are prepared to respond to further attacks against law-enforcement facilities.
