MP’s Express Concerns over Charges on CT Scan Services in Government Hospitals

Members of Parliament on the Committee of Government Assurances and Implementation visiting Mubende Regional Referral Hospital

Members of Parliament on the Committee of Government Assurances and Implementation have expressed their concern over the charges made by government hospitals for CT scan services, yet the machines were funded by the Ministry of Health.

The Members of Parliament made these remarks during an oversight visit at Mubende Regional Referral Hospital on March 4, 2024.

However, Dr. Paul Batibwe, the director of Mubende Regional Referral Hospital, attributed the charges to cost-sharing in order to aid CT scan maintenance.

According to a health worker at Masaka Referral Hospital who preferred anonymity, the payment for CT scan services at the facility differs depending on the extent of the problem being handled, adding that the charge was agreed upon by the Ministry of Health.

On June 2, 2023, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, wrote a letter directing hospitals to charge a certain amount of money for CT-scan services.
