Secondary teachers in Ngora District have protested over delayed salary payments, stating that most of them were last paid in September 2023, while the majority of head teachers have been paid.
The protest took place in the town centre of Ngora District on April 4, 2024.
The teachers complain that although they had several meetings with the district authorities, no payments have been made despite the promises made.
“Some of us have not been paid for a whole year, while others have not received salary payments since November 2023. We had several meetings with the authorities, but our cries have not been answered up to now,” a teacher who preferred anonymity said.
According to local district authorities, several meetings were called for with the teachers, but the District Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) has not been present in all the meetings, leaving them with no clear information to give the teachers.
They stated that during the protest, she went to the CAO’s office and only received a response from his assistant, who stated that payment had been made to the teachers’ accounts.
“During today’s teacher’s protests, the office of the CAO, the assistant CAO, stated that the teachers have been paid and that they should be patient as they await the payment messages on their phones,” local authorities said.
According to local authorities, Ngora District has five government-aided secondary schools, but almost all the teachers in these schools have not received salary payments for over six months.
