The Joint Anti-Terrorism Task Force against suspected terrorists, the Joint Territorial Team in Kiira Region, and the Kiira Central Division have arrested Levi David Mwenze Nyanzi, suspected of belonging to an Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) terror cell.
SCP Enanga Fred, the police spokesperson, confirmed this in a press release dated December 11, 2023, saying that Nyanzi was arrested on December 5, 2023, at around 4:45 a.m. after getting reports of his suspicious behavior of taking pictures at the Embassy restaurant and bar, located along Iganga Road, Jinja Central Ward, Jinja City.
“The suspect, who disguised himself as a mad person, was putting on very dirty clothes and was in possession of bundles of cash in denominations of UGX 50,000, 20,000, and 10,000,” Enanga said.
“When we searched him, we found him in possession of exhibits such as an AK47, bullets, 4 SIM cards, 8 Jinja City Street parking receipts of motor vehicles registration number UBK 620F, 3 other SIM parks, and a school receipt for Victoria Boarding Primary School,” Enanga added.
According to Enanga, upon interrogation, the suspect later admitted that he was an ADF rebel on a surveillance mission.
He added that Nyanzi was examined by a psychiatrist, and it was proven that he was mentally stable, contrary to his disguise.
On the other hand, on December 10, 2023, the Kampala Metropolitan North and Nansana Division Police arrested 40-year-old Baron Muzigyei, a Congolese national who was charged with being a rebel, after he was heard communicating on the phone while mentioning rebel groups in the DRC.
Enanga said that the arrest took place at around 2 a.m. at a local bar in Ochieng zone, Nansana division.
“The suspect, who hails from Beni, DRC, had no identification documents on him. He was handed over to Crime Intelligence for further interrogation,” Enanga said.
Enanga pledged that the police will continue to carry out arrests and disruptive operations aimed at frustrating their mobility and production, which have increased due to intensive operations in both the DRC and Uganda, leaving the ADF weakened, hence establishing mobile, autonomous, and flexible operative cells.
