Police have arrested 124 drivers in an operation targeting drink-driving across nine divisions, as authorities intensify efforts to reduce road crashes and improve road safety.

The operation that was conducted over the weekend, according to the Police Community Liaison Officer and Public Relations Officer, Michael Kananura, resulted in the apprehension of 124 drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Kananura said the police detained all suspects pending court proceedings scheduled for Monday, October 18th, 2026.

The police recorded the arrests across nine divisions, with Katwe registering the most suspects at 24, followed by Kawempe with 18 and Nansana with 16.

Kabalagala and Old Kampala each recorded 14 arrests, while the Central Police Station (CPS) Kampala registered 13. Jinja Road recorded 12 arrests, Kiira Road seven, and Nsangi six.

The operation forms part of police efforts to combat road crashes linked to drink-driving, which continues to pose a serious threat to motorists, passengers, pedestrians and other road users.

In a strong warning to motorists, Kananura urged members of the public to avoid driving after consuming alcohol, advising them to arrange for a sober driver or use a special-hire vehicle to get home safely.

“Our message is clear: If you drink alcohol, do not drive,” Kananura said, warning that police would not allow anyone to endanger lives through drink-driving.

He added that similar operations would continue as the police seek to rid the roads of dangerous driving practices and make them safer for all road users.

The arrests serve as a reminder to motorists to observe traffic regulations and make responsible decisions, particularly when consuming alcohol.

The police have reiterated that road safety is a shared responsibility and urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in preventing avoidable road crashes and protecting lives.
