UNBS Urges Businesses to Use Standard LS to Accelerate Uganda’s Transition to Clean Energy

UNBS has so far published 116 standards covering clean-energy technologies and products, including solar thermal systems, photovoltaic devices, domestic biogas stoves, household biomass stoves and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). These standards provide technical requirements that guide producers and suppliers while helping consumers access products that meet established quality and safety requirements.

Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has urged businesses throughout Uganda’s energy value chain to implement relevant standards in order to enhance product safety, safeguard customers, and assist the nation’s shift to inexpensive, dependable, and clean energy.

This call was issued in a media release on October 14th, 2026, ahead of the World Standards Day 2026 under the theme, “Shared vision for a better world: Spotlight on SDG 7-Affordable and Clean Energy”, which highlights how standards contribute to safe and efficient energy systems and sustainable development.

“As Uganda expands its clean-energy ambitions, businesses must prioritize the quality, safety and performance of the products they manufacture, import and distribute. Adopting applicable standards helps build consumer confidence, supports fair competition and creates a stronger foundation for investment in clean-energy solutions,” said the UNBS Executive Director,” Eng. James Kasigwa.

UNBS has so far published 116 standards covering clean-energy technologies and products, including solar thermal systems, photovoltaic devices, domestic biogas stoves, household biomass stoves and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). These standards provide technical requirements that guide producers and suppliers while helping consumers access products that meet established quality and safety requirements.

According to the release, Uganda’s clean energy transition also aligns with Uganda’s Fourth National Development Plan (NDP IV), 2025/26 -2029/30, which prioritizes sustainable industrialization, private-sector growth and productive infrastructure.

“By promoting quality energy-related products, UNBS supports the enabling environment needed for energy access, industrial productivity and value addition.

“NDP IV targets increasing electricity access to 80% by 2029/30, reducing the share of traditional biomass in the energy mix from 75% to 50%, and increasing clean-energy use for cooking from 25% to 50%. To achieve this however, standards are the critical foundation for ensuring that the energy-related products and technologies are safe, reliable, efficient and fit for purpose,” the media release read.

Clean energy is one that produces little or no pollution, helping to protect human health and the environment, and this includes solar power, hydropower, biogas and cleaner cooking technologies. By implementing relevant standards, it helps to ensure that the products and equipment used are safe, reliable and of the required quality.
