The Uganda U17 Boys National Team, also known as the Uganda Cubs, held their final training session this morning, December 23, 2024, at the MTN Omondi Stadium.

The team prepares for their highly anticipated African Cup of Nations (AFCON) U17Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) Zonal Qualifier semi-final match against Somalia, scheduled for tomorrow; December 24, 2024.

Speaking to the press on Monday, December 23, 2024, Uganda Cubs head coach Brian Ssenyondo expressed confidence in his team’s ability to perform well and secure a spot in the finals.

He highlighted the significance of the match in qualifying for the next match.

“The semi-finals come with two things: the final and qualification for AFCON. We know what we need to do—play well like we did against Kenya, get that first goal, and seal the game,” Ssenyondo said.

Uganda is coming off an impressive 5–0 victory over Kenya in the group stages, while Somalia edged Sudan 1–0 to reach the semi-finals.

Reflecting on their previous encounter with Somalia, where Uganda lost in the last edition in Ethiopia, Ssenyondo stated that the upcoming game is not about revenge but an opportunity to prove themselves.

“Football gives you another opportunity, and it has given us one from the last edition. We have to seize this opportunity very well,” he said.

There were concerns about the fitness of team captain Richard Okello, who sustained an injury during the first half of the game against Kenya.

Ssenyondo revealed that Okello is currently undergoing treatment and is about 60–70% fit.

“We will see what the doctors say by the end of today, but we believe he will be ready to play a part. If not, we have other players who can step in,” he stated.

The Cubs are focused on maintaining their momentum and securing a victory that will take them closer to their dream of qualifying for AFCON.
