Stable Shilling, Low Inflation Highlighted in Uganda’s Economic Outlook Ahead of Budget Month

"Uganda’s shilling has emerged as the most stable currency on the African continent, appreciating by 6.1% over the past 12 months." Ministry of Finance

The Ministry of finance , planning and economic development is set to launch the National Budget Month (NBM) as part of its continued efforts to enhance transparency, accountability, and public participation in the national budgeting process.

The initiative aims to ensure the efficient use of public resources and improve service delivery across the country.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the official launch is scheduled for Thursday, May 29, 2025, at the Uganda Media Centre. This year’s NBM will be held under the theme: “Full Monetization of Uganda’s Economy through Commercial Agriculture, Industrialization, Expanding and Broadening Services, Digital Transformation, and Market Access.”

In a statement posted on its official X account (formerly Twitter), the Ministry highlighted key indicators of the country’s economic stability. Uganda’s shilling has emerged as the most stable currency on the African continent, appreciating by 6.1% over the past 12 months.

The Ministry also noted that inflation remains under control and is projected at 3.6% for the 2025/26 financial year. This makes Uganda’s inflation rate the second lowest in Africa over the past decade.

Looking ahead, the government projects Uganda’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will double to USD 158 billion by 2030. This growth is expected to attract foreign direct investment of up to USD 3.8 billion, while tourism and remittance inflows are projected at USD 1.5 billion and USD 1.4 billion, respectively, over the same period.

The National Budget Month fosters public engagement in fiscal matters and reinforce confidence in Uganda’s economic direction.

The NBM also creates awareness about government priorities and strategies for FY 2025/26 and also provide accountability to the citizens on the key Government achievements.
