Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has said that the government will provide UGX 18 million to each household living in landslide-prone areas of the Bugisu sub-region to help them relocate to safer locations.
Nabbanja made the revelation during a meeting with Bugisu leaders at the Office of the Prime Minister, saying the one-off resettlement package would take effect on October 21st, 2026.
She said beneficiaries would have to use the funds to buy land in safer areas within Bugisu or elsewhere in Uganda.
The Prime Minister explained that the decision followed difficulties in securing large tracts of land within the sub-region for resettling affected communities.
She attributed the initiative to a Cabinet resolution reached on October 5th, 2026, during a meeting chaired by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
The Third Deputy Prime Minister Lukia Isanga Nakadama, ministers, technical officials, Members of Parliament, and local government leaders from Bugisu attended the engagement.
The programme aims to help households move away from landslide-prone areas, although details on the number of beneficiaries and the overall cost of the initiative were not provided.
