UEDCL Replaces 116 Faulty Transformers, Plans over 200,000 New Connections

The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) is set to install 225,000 connections of electricity country wide in a period of eight months.

Jonan Kizza, the UECDL spokesperson made the revelation on May 28, 2025, during a presser at Uganda Media Center while releasing the 48-day performance report post-UMEME takeover.

Kizza confirmed that the plan aligns with the goals set forth by Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) in its distribution license, which was granted on December 31, 2024.

According to Kizza, three-phase and no-pole household connections commenced in April, adding that all 116 faulty transformers inherited from various parts of the country have been replaced.

“This has led to improved power reliability in the affected communities. The replaced transformers range in capacity from 25kVA to 1MVA,” Kizza said.

Kizza revealed that rising cases of vandalism and illegal connections are driving up operational costs and endangering communities.

“In the first month alone, nine incidents were reported in Nakasongola and Luwero, with more in Mityana and Mukono,” he said.

Kizza emphasized that the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) is working closely with law enforcement, local authorities, media, and security agencies to address the growing issue of electricity infrastructure vandalism.

He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any incidents of vandalism to help safeguard the national grid.

In the 48-day performance report following the takeover from UMEME, UEDCL revealed that it now operates 100 service centers across the country, with 96% of its workforce already deployed to their respective locations to enhance service delivery and response times.
