Sombe Soup and its Health Benefits

Sombe soup, particularly made with fresh cassava leaves, is a nutritious and flavorful traditional soup cherished in many East and West African cultures.

It is celebrated for its rich nutrient profile but, most importantly, for its variety of health benefits.

Sombe is made out of fresh cassava leaves, peanut flour, leeks, garlic, onions, celery, cube maggie, and cooking oil, and most people prefer adding bonny meat, fish, or even chicken.

Fresh cassava leaves are a significant source of vitamins and minerals. They are high in vitamin A, essential for eye health, and contain important minerals like calcium and iron, which support bone health and red blood cell production.

Additionally, cassava leaves are rich in protein and fiber, aiding digestion and promoting satiety.

According to Dr. Henry Kasirye, a nutritionist at Bukoto Wellness centre, cassava leaves contain antioxidants that help combat free radicals in the body, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. This can play a role in lowering the risk of chronic diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes. The presence of compounds like flavonoids further enhances their anti-inflammatory properties.

“The high vitamin C content in cassava leaves helps boost the immune system, making the body more resilient against infections. This is particularly beneficial in communities where access to diverse foods may be limited,” Kasirye said.

Joan Uwimbabazi, a chef at Aga’s Kitchen, an online restaurant, says that many people prefer Sombe because of its culinary versatility.

“Sombe soup can be customized with various ingredients such as fish, meat, or legumes, making it not only a nutritious choice but also a versatile one. This adaptability allows it to cater to different dietary preferences while maintaining its health benefits,” Uwimbabazi said.

Uwimbabazi further recommends Sombe because of its high dietary gains and says that incorporating Sombe soup into your diet is an excellent way to harness the benefits of cassava leaves.

“It’s a delicious source of essential nutrients, and the medicinal properties of cassava leaves make sombe soup a valuable addition to a balanced diet, especially in regions where traditional remedies are sought,” she added.

Sombe soup, combined with versatility and delicious flavours, makes it a recommended choice for anyone looking to improve their dietary habits. Embracing this traditional dish can not only enhance personal health but also celebrate cultural culinary practices.

Sombe is greatly enjoyed in areas of western Uganda, a daily source in Rwanda, Burundi, and the DRC, and many who have tasted it say that it is highly recommended for people with low immunity and advisable for people living with both communicable and noncommunicable diseases.
