Police are investigating alleged torture claims of suspects that occurred at the Central Police Station (CPS), in which SP Joel Ntabu, the in charge of investigations, is mentioned.
This stems from the concerns raised by netizens regarding torture of suspects by police officers at the CPS on July 23, 2024.
According to a press statement released on Monday, August 5, 2024, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Police Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan, assured the public that their concerns have been noted and that investigations are being conducted.
“We assure the public that their concerns have been acknowledged. The police are committed to investigating these allegations thoroughly,” Owoyesigyire said.
He highlighted that Superintendent Ntabu’s role involves assigning files to investigating officers and supervising the case files until they reach the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Owoyesigyire stated that the suspects arrested on July 23, 2024, were charged that evening in court, with one suspect remaining in custody, and the police lobby, where the suspects were ushered, is equipped with CCTV cameras.
He, however, stated that unless formal complaints are made, any allegations on social media will be considered an attempt to malign the officer’s reputation, who was lawfully executing his mandate.
Additionally, he urged anyone who feels wronged to formally report to the Professional Standards Unit and the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) at Kibuli for a thorough investigation.
