NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi’s second phase of the nationwide tour together with his supporters has been interrupted after encountering several stops on their way to Kamuli, where he was supposed to have his first rally on May 22, 2024.
Kyagulayi, who set off from the party headquarters at Makerere-Kavule with his leadership team and some members of parliament affiliated with NUP, had an altercation with Uganda Police in Njeru, where police had blocked the Nile bridge to stop NUP supporters from proceeding in a convoy.
However, after a dialogue with the police officers manning the area, Kyagulanyi and his team were later allowed to cross the bridge, but amidist tear gas until they exited Jinja town.
The convoy was again halted at Buwenge after the police staged a road block, dispersed the convoy with tear gas, and ordered them to turn back. Nevertheless, after a few minutes of confrontation, Kyagulanyi and his team turned back and headed to Kampala.
While speaking to the media later on Tuesday evening, Kyagulanyi expressed his disappointment with the excessive force used by the Uganda Police and promised that the tour would go on as planned.
“The security apparatus has again shown its use of excessive force; even when they were aware of our program, we wrote to them and informed them of our program to traverse the country,” Kyagulanyi said.
In August 2023, NUP traversed some parts of the country, and Kyagulanyi, together with his supporters, were meant to carry out a second phase to visit districts that were not visited during the first phase of the tour.
