Kenya to Host African Climate Summit in September

Kenya will co-host the Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi on September 4-6, 2023, at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, where a high-level delegation from Africa and other regions of the world will gather to identify practical answers to climate change.

This year, four Regional Climate Weeks will be organised to generate momentum ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai and the conclusion of the first global stock-take, which will define the path to achieving the Paris Agreement’s core targets.

Africa Climate Week 2023, Nairobi, September 4-8, an event to be hosted by the Kenyan government will take place concurrently with the Africa Climate Summit (4-6 September), also hosted by Kenya.

The Middle East and North Africa Climate Week (MENACW 2023), Riyadh, October 8-12, will be hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Latin America and the Caribbean Climate Week (LACCW 2023), Panama City, 23-27 October, organised by the government of Panama will run concurrently with the XXIII Meeting of the Forum of Latin American and Caribbean Environment Ministers (24-26 October 2023) and the Asia-Pacific region Climate.

His Excellency William S. Ruto, the President of Kenya, visited Global Centre [ GCU] headquarters to mobilize and participate in a Strategic Dialogue on the Africa Climate Summit in Rotterdam.

Soipan Tuya, the Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, has stated that the summit will provide an opportunity for Africa to showcase its resources to the world and to drive a green growth agenda through a low-carbon development pathway that enables the world to decarbonize fast and cost effectively.

President Ruto, as the Chairperson of the summit, said that climate change is the greatest challenge confronting the world today.

The Global Financing Pact later this week in Paris, the Africa Climate Action Summit in Nairobi (September), and COP28 in Dubai (December) will be critical milestones for the international community to chart a solutions-oriented path.

During each summit, Kenya and the United Arab Emirates plan to work together to address these problems by promoting a just energy transition and opening up climate finance to speed up green growth in Africa.

The visit follows a meeting between Professor Patrick Verkooijen, CEO of GCA, and President Ruto in Nairobi in February 2023, where they discussed driving the implementation and financing of climate adaptation.
