The Kanyanya Court Grade one Magistrate has remanded thirteen National Unity Platform (NUP) party supporters for being a public nuisance and handling the national flag in “a careless and degrading way.”
The prosecution occurred on Monday August 10th, 2026, Kanyanya Grade one court.
According to the party Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya, the thirteen NUP supporters were travelling from Kampala to Luwero for burial on Saturday August 8th, 2026, and because they were dssed in NUP party colors and had a flag with them, they were intercepted, arrested and detained at Kawempe Police station.
After being arraigned in court and denied bail Rubongoya said that the state has continued to charge party supporters on useless charges, which is sad though they are not surprised.
“Our thirteen comrades have not been allowed to even make a bail application but have been remanded till the 28th of August 2026, The regime is always manufacturing cases to ensure a constant presence of political prisoners. This is very sad but we have seen this before and we are not surprised,” Rubongoya said.
The accused include Martin Muwonge, Hakim Bwire, Paul Sseremba, Ezra Kawanda, Fred Ssali, Simon Geserwa, Godfrey Kasule, Vivian Nakitende, Mohammed Waswa, Grace Nayebale, Shafiq Musisi, Shakuru Lubega, and Simon Ssuuna.
