Thousands of worshippers and families gathered at Old Kampala Secondary School as Watoto Church launched its annual Christmas celebrations with the lighting of Uganda’s tallest Christmas tree.
The vibrant event took place on 17th December, 2025, transformed the area into a hub of music, praise, and festive cheer, signaling the start of the much-anticipated Christmas season in Kampala.
The celebrations began with an Inter-Church Carols Night that featured choirs and gospel artists from over ten churches across the city.
Performances blended worship with festive energy, setting the tone for the upcoming Christmas Cantata production, ‘Son of God,’ scheduled to run from 19th to 22nd December, 2025 at 8:00 pm nightly.
Entrance to the Cantata is free and open to the public.
Pastor Julius Rwotlonyo, team leader at Watoto Church, emphasized that the celebrations reflect the true meaning of Christmas.
“Christmas is a season where faith and celebration meet, and that is exactly what we are witnessing tonight. We are opening our doors and our hearts to the city, inviting everyone to experience the story of Jesus Christ,” Rwotlonyo said.
Designed to be inclusive and family-friendly, the event welcomes people of all ages and backgrounds.
“This celebration is for families, young people, and visitors from all walks of life. Our desire is that as people enjoy the music and performances, they also encounter the love and hope that Christmas brings,” the Watoto Church team leader added.
Building on the excitement of the Carols Night, Pastor Brian Abaho highlighted how the ‘Son of God’ Cantata combines music and drama to creatively retell the Christmas story.
“The Cantata allows us to share the message of Christ in a way that connects with people right where they are. Faith does not have to be distant or formal, it can be joyful, creative, and accessible,” Abaho stated.
With thousands expected to attend the nightly performances, security remains a top priority.
The Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire assured the public that the police are working closely with organizers to manage crowds and traffic.
“We have deployed sufficient security personnel and implemented traffic management plans to ensure smooth movement and public safety,’’ ASP Owoyesigyire said.
“We ask members of the public to cooperate with security teams as they enjoy the celebrations,” he added.
As Kampala comes alive with lights, music, and festive cheer, Watoto Church’s Christmas celebrations continue to provide a space for reflection, joy, and community, spreading the season’s message of hope, love, and peace across the heart of the city.
