Makerere University Guild President aspirant, Kadondi Gracious, has accused the university administration, through the Office of the Dean of Students, of applying double standards and favoring certain candidates in the ongoing guild elections.
Kadondi, who is contesting on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket, had planned a street rally and music event at Lanika Lane in Kikoni on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, to mobilize supporters. However, the event was abruptly canceled without prior consultation.
Speaking to the press at Olympia Students Hostel in Kikoni, Kadondi said his team had obtained police clearance for the event but were later informed that the venue had already been booked by another group.
“On March 30, 2026, we formally wrote to the Uganda Police informing them of our planned event scheduled for April 7, and the letter was received and approved. However, on April 3, we were informed that another group had submitted a request for the same venue and date,” Kadondi explained.
She accused the university administration of favoritism, noting that other candidates had previously been allowed to hold rallies and music shows.
“If all events are now to be canceled in the interest of order, why was a similar event for another candidate permitted last week with full police facilitation? Does this mean some campaigns are more deserving of support than others?” Kadondi asked.
In response, the Office of the Dean of Students issued a letter on April 7, 2026, citing credible reports that physical campaign activities could escalate into violence and pose safety risks to students and the surrounding community.
“Students are reminded that under the Makerere University Students Guild Statute 2022, Section 10(b), all elections shall be conducted virtually unless otherwise approved by the University Council. Therefore, all campaign activities, including physical rallies, processions, concerts, or gatherings intended to mobilize support, are not permitted,” the letter read.
The guild elections at Makerere University are scheduled for April 9, 2026, with 13 candidates currently vying for the position of Guild President.
