2023 Failed Students will not Repeat, We Shall give them Redemption UCE Exams- Prof Obua

Prof. Celestino Obua, the Chairperson of the Uganda Examination Board (UNEB)

The Uganda Examination Board (UNEB) is set to administer a one off transitional examination set of exams to candidates who failed the previous Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examination, since they cannot repeat exams of the new curriculum starting in 2024.

This was revealed by Prof. Celestino Obua, the Chairperson of the Uganda Examination Board (UNEB), on February 15, 2024, during the release of the UCE results for the year 2023 at State Lodge Nakasero.

Obua noted that in the past years, candidates who would not have made it in an examination, would repeat the following examination season; however, it will not be applied this year.

He also noted that UCE 2023 is the last examination administered under the old curriculum, adding that the 2024 October–November examination will be administered in accordance with the new lower secondary curriculum.

“In the past, candidates who would not have made it in an examination, such as this one, would repeat the examination in the following examination season. This will not be possible in 2024, as the examination format and other conditions will be drastically different,” Obua said.

Obua identified the categories of students that are eligible to sit this examination, and these include those who sat the UCE examination in 2023 but would wish to repeat the examination, those who registered but did not sit the examination or dropped out due to illness or other conditions, those who missed the registration for the 2023 examination for various reasons, and adult learners studying on their own or at any learning facilities.
