BUSINESS OWNERS DECRY STRICT SECURITY GUIDELINES AT MARTYRS SHRINES

Local business owners near the popular Martyrs Shrines of Namugongo are expressing their frustration and concern over the implementation of strict security guidelines imposed by authorities. While the measures aim to ensure the safety of pilgrims, business owners argue that these restrictions are adversely affecting their livelihoods.

The Martyrs Shrines attract thousands of devotees and tourists every year, thus contributing significantly to the local economy. However, security concerns have prompted authorities to tighten security measures, leading to increased regulations that are impacting the surrounding businesses.

One of the major grievances expressed by local business owners is the limited access to their establishments. With barricades and checkpoints erected around the Martyrs Shrines, customers find it increasingly challenging to reach their preferred shops, restaurants, and hotels.

The reduced footfall has resulted in a sharp decline in revenue for many businesses.

Abaasa Karungi, owner of a popular restaurant near the Catholic Martyrs Shrine, lamented, “We used to have a steady stream of customers, especially during the pilgrimage season. However, due to the stringent security measures, our business has registered a downfall. The barricades make it difficult for people to reach us, and as a result, our daily sales have dropped significantly.”

Additionally, business owners argue that the security guidelines have negatively impacted their ability to restock and supply their establishments. Delivery vehicles now face increased scrutiny at the checkpoints, leading to delays and disruptions in the supply chain. This has led to shortages of essential goods and increased prices, hence discouraging potential customers from patronizing local businesses.

Some business owners claim that the security measures have not been implemented in a balanced manner. Arguing that while ensuring safety is of utmost importance, there should be a greater consideration for the economic well-being of the local community.

“Security ought to propose alternative solutions, such as designated routes for pilgrims and improved coordination with us the business owners to mitigate the adverse effects,” one of the business owners said.

In response to the grievances raised by local business owners, authorities have stated that the security measures are essential to safeguard the lives of pilgrims and maintain public order.

Security emphasized that, the guidelines were implemented after careful assessment of the security situation and consultation with relevant stakeholders.

As the Martyrs day approaches, both the local business owners and authorities are hopeful that a consensus can be reached.

While ensuring the safety of pilgrims remains a top priority, finding a mutually beneficial solution that supports the local economy and preserves the livelihoods of business owners is crucial.

In the meantime, local business owners continue hoping that their concerns will be taken into account in the coming years, and that measures will be implemented to mitigate the adverse effects on their livelihoods.
