The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, HE Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, has formally congratulated the President-elect, General Mamadi Doumbouya for the peaceful nature of the presidential election in Guinea.
In a statement dated Monday, January 5th, 2026, the Chairperson welcomed Doumbouya’s election with 86.72% of the votes, in line with the Supreme Court’s proclamation of the final results issued on January 4th, 2026.
“‘The Chairperson of the Commission congratulates the Guinean people for casting their vote calmly and peacefully. This is a demonstration of ownership of the electoral process by the people of Guinea,” HE Mahamoud Ali said.
He also extended his congratulations to the national stakeholders.
“The Chairperson of the Commission congratulates the national stakeholders in the process. and the technical and financial partners for their leadership, sense of responsibility, and support, which contributed to the smooth conduct of the elections in accordance with the relevant international standards and the national legal framework,” he added.
As for the future, the Chairperson reaffirmed the AU’s support for the Guinea transition.
“The Chairperson of the Commission reiterates his full commitment and that of the African Union to continue providing support to the Republic of Guinea for a swift return to constitutional order, the consolidation of democracy and the rule of law, and the strengthening of national unity, peace, and stability,” the statement read.
Most notably, Youssouf asked for the international position concerning Guinea to be reviewed.
“The Chairperson of the Commission. urges the African Union and the international community to assess the situation in the Republic of Guinea and consider lifting the sanctions imposed on the country in order to create favorable conditions for the implementation of the roadmap,” HE Mahamoud Ali stated.
The AU Commission urged all stakeholders to make dialogue and consultation a priority and to use legal means in all circumstances to resolve any disputes and complete the on-going process.
