Army Court Convicts UPDF Soldier to Life Imprisonment

Cpl Avugo

The UPDF Court martial has convicted Corporal Peter Avugo, a soldier attached to the Signal Department for the Air Force Evacuation of the Mountain Division, has been convicted to life imprisonment.

Cpl. Avuga was found guilty by the Mountain Division Court martial sitting at Muhooti Barracks in Fort Portal City, Kabarole District, on Wednesday, October 11, 2023.

Lt. Col. Benon Besigye said the soldier was found guilty on two counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder, and he is to serve the sentences at Katoju government prison, Fort Portal City, in Kabarole district.

“Upon assessing the evidence before court, Avuga has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of two UPDF officers and the attempted murder of five others,” said Besigye.

The convict has 14 days to file an appeal, according to Lt. Col. Besigye.

It is alleged that on July 14, 2023, Avugo murdered Private Richard Anyoro and Staff Sergeant Albert Tony Ochen.

In addition, Avugo also attempted to shoot the other five colleagues dead. However, Cpl. Lomilo, his co-accused, denied all the charges and was remanded pending trial.
