The Uganda wildlife authority (UWA) has announced the resumption of hiking activities to Margherita Peak, which is the highest point in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. This was announced in a statement released by the authority on August 20, 2024.

The development follows a temporary suspension of activities due to safety concerns that have since been addressed.

UWA confirmed that significant safety enhancements have been implemented to ensure the well-being of all the hikers.

“Key among these improvements is the construction of a bridge across the crevasse in the Margherita glacier. This bridge, along with additional climbing ropes installed in collaboration with our partners in the park, will enable safe passage through the challenging sections of the trail,’’ the statement read in part.

“We are confident that these enhancements will provide a safer and more enjoyable experience for all visitors seeking to summit one of Africa’s most iconic peaks,” the statement read.

In commitment to ensure the safety of all visitors, UWA pledged to continuously monitor the hiking routes.

“As a precautionary measure, UWA will maintain close monitoring of the hiking routes to ensure ongoing safety and will provide updates as needed. This resumption of activities marks a significant milestone in promoting tourism in the region, reaffirming the Rwenzori Mountains as a premier destination for adventure enthusiasts,’’ UWA noted.

Considering the said measures in place, UWA is highly anticipating welcoming hikers back to the majestic heights of Margherita Peak and beyond, inviting all to experience the unparalleled natural splendor of the Rwenzori Mountains.
