The Uganda People’s Congress party (UPC) has called for the unconditional release of the youth arrested during the “March to Parliament” protests, stating that they were peaceful and lawful as stipulated in the constitution of Uganda.
According to the party spokesperson, Sharon Arach Oyat, UPC condemns the gruesome arrests of the youth and calls for their release.
“We condemn the inhumane arrests of those youth who were peacefully protesting against corruption that is affecting the whole country. We call upon all offices responsible, like the Inspector General and the Parliament of Uganda, to unconditionally release those who were arrested,” she noted.
Arach also stated that security agencies should act professionally while arresting unarmed civilians.
“During the protests, we noticed some officers in plain clothes making arrests and had no time to introduce themselves before making arrests. We also noticed numberless drones transporting those arrested. This is so unprofessional of our security agencies,” she added.
Arach said this during the party’s weekly press release that took place on July 24, 2024, at the party headquarters in Uganda House, Kampala.
On July 23, 2024, a number of youth were arrested during the “March to Parliament” protests, which were organized to express youth’s dissatisfaction with the corruption in Uganda.
