The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has released a comprehensive update on the post-National Population and Housing Census 2024, which was conducted in May 2024.

Chris Ndatira Mukiza, the Executive Director and Census Commissioner of UBOS, said in a press statement released on August 8, 2024, that the preliminary findings indicate that Uganda’s population stands at approximately 45.9 million.

“The census was primarily funded by the government of Uganda, which contributed UGX 328.74 billion, while development partners, including UNHCR, UNDP, and UNFPA, provided an additional UGX 18.5 billion,” Mukiza said.

Mukiza outlined several key activities following the census, like training initiatives, where UBOS conducted extensive training sessions across various levels.

“Tier one handled the training of National Trainers, which cost UGX 59.6 million; Tier two handled the national training for District Census officials, totaling UGX 2.78 billion; Tier three was for training for Sub-County and Town Council Supervisors, with an expenditure of UGX 5.87 billion; and finally Tier four handled the training for Enumeration Supervisors and Enumerators, costing UGX 53.01 billion,” he said.

He added that the overall training expenses amounted to UGX 61.72 billion, and that for the payment of census personnel, a total of UGX 88.7 billion was already disbursed to them via the E-Cash platform.

“Enumerators out of 115,846 enumerators, 114,327 (98.7%) have been fully compensated, Field guides out of 112,970 guides, 109,730 (97.1%) have received their payments, whereas Enumeration Supervisors out of 13,272, 14,643 have been paid, while 1,371 are pending corrections, then Sub-County Supervisors 4,686 (99.4%) have been compensated, and District Officials 912 (55.78%) of 1,635 officials have received payment, with the remainder to be compensated by the end of August 2024,” Mukiza noted.

Mukiza further stated that the equipment and resources deployed by UBOS were 122,026 tablets and 119,418 power banks for the census, and so far, 99.3% of the tablets and 90.2% of the power banks have been retrieved, with a small number still outstanding.

He assured the public that the pending payments will be affected by the Bureau as efforts are being made to make sure that all participants receive their payments. He added that they are collaborating with local government officials to resolve any issues related to pending payments, emphasizing that all entitlements will be disbursed directly through Mobile Money or bank accounts.

According to Mukiza, UBOS is currently in the process of analyzing the collected census data, with final results expected to be released by the end of September 2024.
