UEDCL Promises Smooth Power Transition As It Takes Over UMEME Space

The 20-year electricity distribution concession held by Umeme Limited is set to expire on March 1, 2025, with the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) prepared to take over operations.

Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has said that the public should be assured of a seamless power transfer as it commences new operations come March 2025.

The change marks a significant milestone, aligning with the government’s decision not to renew private sector concessions in electricity distribution.

Speaking on a local broadcast on January 6, 2025, Jonan Kiiza, UEDCL Public Relations Officer, emphasized to the public that the transition has been carefully planned over the past two years.

“We have been working on a transition roadmap, and recruitment is now in its final phase,” Kiiza stated.

His remarks aimed to ease concerns about potential service disruptions as the government reclaims control of electricity distribution.

With the transition nearing completion, UEDCL remains committed to ensuring efficient power transmission across the country.

“Consumers won’t experience any disruption when Umeme exits on March 1st. We are ensuring a seamless transition, with recruitment being the final phase of the takeover,” Kiiza said.

Energy Minister Ruth Nankabirwa reiterated the capability of UEDCL in managing the sale and distribution of power in the country during the handover of two licenses.

According to her, plans are in the final stages to ensure Umeme and UEDCL staff are retained as the new contract takes effect as part of a seamless transfer.

“They have assured me they are ready for the job. As a government, we are not worried,” Nankabirwa added.

The minister, however, tasked UEDCL with ensuring affordability, access, quality, and reliability for electricity to ensure Ugandans enjoy power.

The 20-year electricity distribution concession held by Umeme Limited is set to expire on March 1, 2025, with the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) prepared to take over operations.

As the transition approaches, the debate continues over whether UEDCL will sustain the gains made under Umeme’s tenure.

The government remains optimistic, positioning the takeover as a step toward a more self-reliant and efficient electricity distribution system.
