Parliament Pledges to Increase Budget Allocation for Sports

Parliament has congratulated two gold medalists, Joshua Cheptegei and Victor Kiplangat, from the just concluded World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest, Hungary.

While presiding over the plenary session on Tuesday, August 29th, 2023, the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Anet Among, said there is an urgent need to increase budget allocation to promote sporting activities in Uganda.

“In a rather jubilant mood, I take this opportunity to congratulate our athletes at the just concluded World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Uganda garnered two (2) gold medals courtesy of Joshua Cheptegei in the 10,000 metres and Victor Kiplangat in the marathon. Congratulations, Team Uganda! As we celebrate our exceptional athletes, we need to match these congratulations with the requisite budgetary and logistical resources,” said Among.

On August 20, 2023, Cheptegei won the first gold for Uganda in the 10,000 metre finals to become the third athlete in world history to get a hat-trick. At the same time, Victor Kiplangat claimed the marathon gold, Uganda’s first since 2013 in Moscow, Russia, with Steven Kiprotich.

The final medal standings of the championship placed Uganda in 11th place with two gold medals.
