NUP Demands Justice, Compensation for 2020 Riot Victims

“We are still demanding the release of the people who were arrested and compensation for the victims,” Ssenyonyi said.

The leaders of the National Unity Platform (NUP) has renewed calls for the government to account for the people who lost their lives and were imprisoned during the 2020 November riots.

While addressing the members of the press, Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of the Opposition in parliament, said that the people that the government alleges are criminals should be presented in court for justice to be delivered.

“We are still demanding the release of the people who were arrested and compensation for the victims,” Ssenyonyi said.

He made these remarks during NUP memorial prayers for the victims at the party headquarters in Makerere Kavule on Wednesday, November 19th 2025.

Benjamini Katana, the NUP national treasurer, said that the memorial prayers were meant to not only honour the dead, but also to further the struggle and see that the security personnel who killed the civilians are held accountable.

Stephen Godfrey Buule, a brother to one of the victims killed during the November riots, appreciated the party for continuously supporting their family.

Pastor Dorothy Nantongo, while leading the prayers, said that there is no evil in being partisan even when you are a religious leader.

“The time will come, and God will save those in prison and remove them from the hands of those in power. To those who are contesting for different positions, God is making triumph those opposing you,” Nantongo said.

In 2020, the leading opposition Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, was arrested. He was on the campaign trail ahead of the 2021 presidential elections. Mass demonstrations demanding the release of the popular candidate broke out in and around the capital, Kampala. During the two days, government security agents cracked down on the protests, where some were arrested and a few.
