Museveni Seeks Re-Election to Safeguard Uganda’s Stability and Progress

“I have chosen to step forward once more to guide the Bazukulu (grandchildren) and their parents over the next five years,” the president declared. “This period must be dedicated to a serious and unwavering fight against corruption. We must root it out completely.”

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has officially declared his intention to run for re-election, positioning himself as the anchor of Uganda’s continued stability, development, and national transformation.

Accompanied by First Lady Maama Janet Kataaha Museveni, the President picked up nomination forms on Saturday, June 28, 2025, from the National Resistance Movement (NRM) headquarters at Plot 10, Kyadondo Road in Kampala. He is seeking to contest as both the NRM national chairperson and the party’s presidential flag bearer in the upcoming 2026 general elections.

The event was marked by a large and enthusiastic crowd of NRM supporters who turned up in solidarity. Senior party officials, including Vice President Jessica Alupo, Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, and NRM Director of Mobilization Rosemary Nansubuga Seninde, were among the high-profile leaders who welcomed the president.

Addressing the crowd, President Museveni highlighted his decision to seek another term as a response to the continued need for steady leadership in a world and region facing political and economic uncertainty.

“I have chosen to step forward once more to guide the Bazukulu (grandchildren) and their parents over the next five years,” the president declared. “This period must be dedicated to a serious and unwavering fight against corruption. We must root it out completely.”

Museveni positioned his candidacy as a pillar of national stability, a quality he says is essential for economic growth, social cohesion, and peace. He credited the country’s progress to consistent NRM policies, which, over the years, have lifted Uganda from instability to one of the more secure and resilient nations in the region.

The President also emphasized the importance of safeguarding democratic governance and strengthening grassroots participation. He reminded supporters that under NRM leadership, Ugandans were empowered to elect leaders at all levels.

’’When the NRM came to power, we returned the power to the people to elect their own leaders,” President Museveni said.

“You have just chosen your party structures, and soon, you will elect national leaders. These leaders must represent your interests and ensure accountability in your communities,” he added.

At the heart of his message was a strong pledge to fight corruption, which he described as a persistent obstacle to Uganda’s development. He made it clear that one of his primary goals in the next term would be to root out corruption and enforce discipline within the public service.

The re-election bid comes as Uganda prepares for a pivotal moment in its development agenda, with major investments in infrastructure, industrialization, education, and digital transformation underway.

Supporters say Museveni’s leadership offers continuity and a clear vision for long-term national transformation, particularly in safeguarding security and maintaining Uganda’s global standing.

As the country heads toward the 2026 elections, President Museveni is presenting himself not just as a candidate, but as a stabilizing force, a leader with the experience and vision to steer Uganda through a rapidly changing world while protecting the gains made under the NRM.
