Uganda’s Electoral Commission (EC) has declared Yoweri Kaguta Museveni the winner of the 2026 presidential elections.
The 81-year-old secures another 5-year term in office as Uganda’s president after a landslide win, scooping more than over 70% percent of the valid votes cast nationwide.
Announcing the final results on January 17th, 2026, Electoral Commission Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama confirmed that President Museveni of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) received 7,946,772 votes, representing 71.65% of the total ballots.
The Commission announced that this outcome gives him a clear constitutional victory in the first round.
“The Electoral Commission has conducted this election in accordance with the Constitution and the electoral laws of Uganda, and the results announced today reflect the will of the people,” Byabakama said.
The Commission released the detailed results for all candidates as follows: Robert Kyagulanyi of the National Unity Platform (NUP) polled 2,741,238 votes, representing 17.9 percent; Mugisha Muntu of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) obtained 59,276 votes, representing 0.39 percent; Joseph Kabuleta Kabinga garnered 45,959 votes, representing 0.30 percent; Samuel Walter Kasibante collected 33,440 votes, representing 0.22 percent; Abed Bwanika Munyagwa received 31,666 votes, representing 0.21 percent; Michael Mabirizi, an Independent candidate, got 23,458 votes, representing 0.15 percent; Mafabi obtained 2,939 votes, representing 0.02 percent; and Frank Bulira secured 45,959 votes, representing 0.30 percent.
The Electoral Commission reported that a total of 15,353,110 votes were cast out of 27,536,201 registered voters, representing a voter turnout of approximately 52 percent.
The Commission congratulated President Museveni on his victory and commended all candidates and voters for participating peacefully in the democratic process. It further urged the public and political actors to respect the declared results and maintain peace as the country moves forward after the election.
