The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje, has strongly condemned the National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters for disrespecting the grave of the late Muhammad Ssegirinya, saying it is “a violation of Islamic customs and showed disrespect to the deceased.”

He made his stance during the inspection of the ongoing construction works of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) multi-storied apartment building with 29 housing units in an upscale suburb, Lubaga Division, on Monday, February 10, 2025.

Mufti Mubajje accused the NUP faction of taking their political campaigns to the late Ssegirinya’s grave, saying it was against the Islamic traditions.

According to him, Allah said in Surah Al-Ma’idah 48-58 that ‘Believers do not seek any guardianship from the dead; it’s Haram.’. This means it is not permissible to seek blessings or intervention from the deceased.

“Muhammad Lusswa Luwemba has taken his political campaign to an unusual yet symbolic location, the final resting place of the late Ssegirinya. That it is time for NUP supporters to know that, according to Islamic tradition, once a person passes away, they are no longer involved in earthly concerns,” Mubajje said.

He emphasized to Ssegirinya’s family that such disrespectful actions should stop, and the deceased should be allowed to rest in peace as the family focuses on sending prayers for him.
