MoH on High Alert as Ebola Scare Hits Fort Portal

"We are closely monitoring the situation, and results are expected soon. In the meantime, we urge the public to remain vigilant and adhere to all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)," Dr Bahizi stated.

Health authorities in Fort Portal have heightened safety measures after some individuals were reported to have been in contact with a deceased person suspected to have the Ebola virus.

While speaking to the media on March 6, 2025, Dr Archibald Newton Bahizi, the Acting Director of Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital, confirmed that samples from the suspected cases have been sent to Kampala for testing.

“We are closely monitoring the situation, and results are expected soon. In the meantime, we urge the public to remain vigilant and adhere to all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs),” Dr Bahizi stated.

“Our teams are on standby, and necessary protocols are in place. However, we must all work together by adhering to health guidelines to prevent any possible spread,” he added.

Dr Bahizi emphasized the importance of proper hygiene, avoiding physical contact, and promptly reporting any suspected symptoms to health authorities to curb any potential spread of the virus.

“Ebola is a deadly virus that spreads rapidly once it enters a community. We urge the public to remain cautious, follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and report any suspected symptoms immediately,” Dr  Bahizi stated.

Ebola, a highly contagious and deadly virus, was first identified in 1976 near the Ebola River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since then, Uganda has experienced multiple outbreaks.

The most recent Ebola virus outbreak in Uganda was declared on January 30, 2025, by Uganda’s Ministry of Health.

The virus spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids of an infected person, making swift containment measures crucial.

As the situation develops, the Ministry of Health has assured the public that contingency measures are in place and has called for public cooperation, as it is essential in preventing the spread of the virus.

The health authorities further urged the locals to adhere to health guidelines, practice proper hygiene, and report any symptoms promptly to ensure the safety of the community.
