The 21st edition of the Masaza Cup was officially launched on Wednesday, June 19, 2025, at Bulange, Mengo. The eagerly anticipated tournament will kick off on Saturday, June 21, 2025, with an opening match between Buddu and Gomba at Kitovu Arena in Masaka.
During the launch event, the Katikkiro of Buganda, Owek Charles Peter Mayiga, emphasized that the Masaza Cup is more than just a football competition. It serves as a powerful tool for uniting communities and promoting positive social change.
This year’s tournament carries a significant message: to protect the girl child and take collective action in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
“As men, we must be conscious of our responsibility. Let this tournament be a reminder to protect the girl child and support those living with HIV by following medical advice. If we are serious about ending HIV by 2030, we must all take responsibility,” Mayiga said.
In a historic move, the Katikkiro also revealed that the Kabaka’s cabinet has decided to upgrade the Masaza teams into fully-fledged sports clubs. This initiative, he said, aims to provide young people with more professional opportunities and strengthen the role of sports in community development.
Centenary Bank, a long-time sponsor of the tournament, pledged UGX 200 million in support of this year’s edition. Dr. Fabian Kasi, the bank’s Managing Director, expressed the bank’s continued commitment to the Masaza Cup, noting that their total support for the tournament has now exceeded UGX 2 billion.
“We are proud to have supported the Masaza Cup for over 12 years,” Dr. Kasi said. “Our investment in this tournament goes beyond football; it’s about promoting culture, fostering unity, and contributing to the development of our communities.”
The 2025 Masaza Cup will feature 18 counties from Buganda, divided into three pools, promising an exciting and competitive tournament ahead.
