Kyagulanyi Dares Museveni to International Audit over Poll Rigging Claims

The President of the opposition party National Unity Platform (NUP), Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi, has challenged President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to submit to an international audit after the past rigged election allegations.

While addressing journalists and the NUP fraternity on September 16, 2024, at the party headquarters in Makerere-Kavule, Kyagulanyi asked the president to appear in court in accordance with the law to defend the election result of the previous election.

He said that NUP as a party demands the audit in accordance with the law and also challenges General Museveni to cede his presidential immunity and appear in court.

“I am challenging General Museveni to submit himself to an international audit. This has been our call from the beginning. We have been calling for an audit of the 2021 election, but instead he just kept arresting our people,” Kyagulanyi said.

Kyagulanyi added that if the argument at hand is settled, maybe the people of Uganda will be given a chance to be led by the president that they realistically elected.

“If Museveni is a man, let him take the challenge, and if he cannot, he should keep quiet and swallow his shame,” Kyagulanyi noted.

He questioned the reluctance of President Museveni in disbanding the Electoral Commission if he maintains the rigged election claims against NUP.

“Why is he still appointing Byabakama, who superintendents the rigging of more than a million votes instead of firing him?” Kyagulanyi queried.

The call comes after President Museveni, on September 12, 2024, during the Thanksgiving ceremony of the fallen General Aronda Nyakairima, accused the NUP party of publicly rigging one million votes during the 2021 elections.
