The Minister of State for Gender and Culture Affairs, Peace Regis Mutuuzo has said that Kiryandongo district will host the 2023 Launch of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence (GBV) against girls and women.

While addressing the media at Uganda Media Centre on November 21, 2023, Mutuuzo said that, the launch will take place on November 24, 2023, at Siriba Primary School, Bweyale town council in Kiryadongo district.

“The selection of Kiryadongo district as the venue for the national launch was informed by the high teenage pregnancy rates which stands at 22% compared to the national average of 5%, and the district hosts refugees and many internally displaced people,” Mutuuzo said.

According to the Minister, the 16 Days of Activism Campaign commences on November 25, 2023, which is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, with a National Launch which flags off various activities at national and district levels in line with the national theme, and ends on December 10, 2023, which is the Human Rights Day.

She noted that, to coincide with the launch, Uganda is also joining an Africa wide campaign named Africa Educates Her, aimed at ensuring that every girl has access to quality education from early childhood through secondary and higher education.

Mutuzo called upon everyone to become an ally in preventing Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG).

The Ministry of Gender Labor and Social Development with the UN Family, Development Partners and Non-State Actors will organize a number of activities during the 16 Days of Activism across the Country.

The 16 Days of Activism against GBV Campaign was inaugurated in 1991 and has since grown globally. It is marked with a wide range of activities organized by various stakeholders. 2023 marks the 32nd Anniversary of the 16 Days of Activism Campaign.
