Police in Kiboga District have launched a manhunt for a prison warder who allegedly opened fire on his supervisors, killing three people before fleeing the facility.
Uganda Prisons Service (UPS), confirmed that the incident took place on Monday, February 23rd, 2026.
The victims have been identified as Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Hope Catherine, who served as Deputy Officer in Charge; Principal Officer I Akishuri Bright, the third in command at the facility; and Ms. Ayebare Sarah, the spouse of the Officer in Charge.
The Senior Commissioner of Prisons and Service Spokesperson Frank Baine Mayanja, revealed that the shooting occurred at about 10:00 a.m. when No. 13544 Warder Anguyo Moses reportedly turned his gun on his supervisors.
All three victims died from gunshot wounds sustained during the attack.
“The suspect fled immediately after the shooting, and Police has been alerted and quickly secured the scene. The firearm believed to have been used in the attack has since been recovered,” Baine said.
However, the suspect remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous.
The Uganda Police Force, working jointly with other security agencies, has launched operations to track down the fugitive officer.
Members of the public have been urged to report any information that could lead to his arrest.
The incident has sent shockwaves through Kiboga District, where the prison facility is located. Security around the area has been heightened as investigations continue.
