Police in Katwe Division have dismantled a notorious panga-wielding robbery gang that has been terrorizing residents across Makindye and surrounding areas, in a breakthrough operation that exposed a well-coordinated criminal network.
According to a statement issued on April 9th, 2026, by Deputy Police Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the gang had been operating in Makindye, Kizungu (Salaama), Bunga, and Katwe, targeting unsuspecting victims using pangas and motorcycles to execute swift, coordinated robberies.
The crackdown followed a series of intelligence-led operations that began on April 5th, 2026, when security operatives arrested a key suspect identified as Olwo, also known as Tom, along Mubaraka Road in Makindye Division.
At the time of his arrest, Olwo was riding a motorcycle, registration number UMA 979 HA, believed to have been used in multiple criminal activities.
During interrogation, Olwo reportedly confessed to being part of an organized robbery ring and provided critical information that led to further arrests.
Acting on the intelligence, police conducted a coordinated early morning raid at around 5:00am on April 8th, 2026, in Kapeeke Zone, Kibuye I Parish, Makindye Division, leading to the arrest of nine additional suspects, including Latif Bogere, also known as Musoga, and Ivan Turyahirwa, alias Musiramu.
Investigations have since revealed that the gang relied heavily on motorcycles some suspected to have been stolen to carry out attacks and facilitate quick getaways after targeting victims for cash and electronic devices.
“The suspects confessed to multiple robberies, including the theft of UGX 350,000 from a motor vehicle in Kizungu Zone, as well as several mobile phone snatching incidents along Salaama Road,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
Police also impounded four motorcycles believed to have been used in the commission of the crimes and recovered a suspected stolen mobile phone.
Authorities say the group had operated for a considerable period, exploiting mobility and coordinated tactics to evade capture while instilling fear among residents in the affected areas.
All suspects are currently in custody and are expected to be charged in court upon completion of investigations.
Police have pledged to continue intelligence-led operations to dismantle similar criminal networks and enhance public safety.
