Judiciary to Honor Fallen Lady Justice Arach-Amoko Today

Lady Justice Stella Arach-Amoko

The Judiciary is set to hold a special court session to honor Lady Justice Stella Arach-Amoko of the Supreme Court, who died on Saturday, June 17, 2023.

Richard Butera, the deputy chief justice, confirmed that the session will be held at the judicial headquarters today, Tuesday, June 20, 2023 in Kampala.

Butera said the session would be followed by an overnight vigil at the deceased’s residence in Kinawataka at 6:00 p.m. (Tuesday).

According to the funeral schedules released by the judiciary, a requiem mass will be held on Wednesday, June 21st, 2023, at Our Lady of Africa Mbuya church at 9:00 a.m. before the body is transported to Adjumani district, where a joint West Nile district council session shall be held and later laid to rest at her ancestral home in Araa village on Friday, June 23, 2023.

Justice Amoko joined the Judiciary in 1997 as a judge of the High Court, was elevated to justice of the Appeal Court in 2010, and was later appointed justice of the Supreme Court in 2012, a position she held until she breathed her last.

It should be remembered that with Arach-Amoko’s promotion to the Supreme Court in 2013, she joined five other justices in throwing out a constitutional court judgment that kicked some NRM “rebel” MPs out of parliament on account of indiscipline and going against party positions.

Justice Arach-Amoko also agreed with eight other justices to toss out Mr. John Patrick Amama Mbabazi’s petition challenging President Museveni’s 2016 victory, citing a lack of evidence to prove the allegations contained in the petition.
