In recent times, schools have witnessed a distressing surge in incidents like suicides, fights, arsons, and indiscipline among students.

The tragic story of Moses Atukwatse, an 18-year-old Senior four student from St. Michael Rugazi High School who committed suicide on July 20, 2023, and other cases that have happened in the past exemplify the severity of the issue.

In a recent discussion I had with some parents, I shared some of the underlying factors contributing to these challenges and emphasized the urgent need for schools and all stakeholders to prioritize mental health support for both students and teachers.

The alarming rise in suicides, fights, arsons, and indiscipline is a matter of grave concern for parents and educators alike. Social networks and media reports have brought to light the immense stress that students are experiencing in schools.

Atukwatse’s unfortunate case is a stark reminder of the urgency to address these issues promptly. Several factors are potentially contributing to these distressing incidents. Among them are:

Highhandedness of School Administrators and Teachers: A negative and authoritative approach from school authorities can create an oppressive environment, leading to student frustration and resentment.

Parental Neglect: Lack of parental involvement and support can exacerbate students’ emotional challenges, leaving them vulnerable to various issues.

Bullying: Instances of bullying within schools can significantly impact a student’s mental health and overall well-being.

Academic Pressure: The intense pressure to excel academically can push students to the breaking point, resulting in severe stress and anxiety.

Drug Abuse: Substance abuse among students is another worrying factor contributing to behavioral problems and mental health issues.

The case of Moses Atukwatse exemplifies the consequences of unaddressed mental health challenges in schools. The lack of understanding and proper support may have tragically contributed to his decision to take his own life. Schools must learn from such incidents and proactively implement measures to support their students’ mental well-being.

Addressing mental health challenges is of paramount importance for both students and teachers. Creating a safe and supportive school environment that prioritizes mental well-being will help prevent such unfortunate incidents from occurring in the future.

To tackle these issues effectively, schools should consider being intentional about having Mental Health Education to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and promote open discussions about emotional well-being. Establish on-school counseling services where students can seek professional help and guidance, provide teachers with training on identifying signs of distress, and refer students to appropriate support systems. Encourage active parental involvement in their children’s education and well-being, fostering a strong support network.

The rising incidents of suicides, fights, arsons, and indiscipline among students demand urgent action. By fostering a nurturing and compassionate environment, schools can ensure the well-being of both students and teachers, creating a safer and healthier educational community for all.
