Entebbe International Airport Breaks Record in Passenger Traffic

As air travel continues to rebound globally, Entebbe International Airport is poised to maintain its upward trajectory, contributing to Uganda's economic growth and connectivity to the world.

Entebbe International Airport has registered a vast increase in passenger traffic with 212,791 international passengers, which is a historic milestone achieved in August 2024, marking the highest monthly total in the airport’s history.

This striking figure translates to an average of 6,861 passengers per day, showcasing a significant increase in air travel activity.

Vianney Mpungu Luggya, the spokesperson of the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), revealed on his X handle on September 16, 2024, that among the total passengers, 108,055 were departing, while 104,646 arrived at the airport, highlighting a balanced flow of international travel.

“This surge in passenger numbers underscores the growing importance of Entebbe as a key hub for both regional and international flights,” Luggya said.

He noted that the previous record for monthly passenger traffic was set in December 2023, with 198,961 travelers, averaging 6,418 per day.

Luggya added that January 2024 followed closely behind with 196,211 passengers, averaging 6,329 daily.

Luggya further stated that the month of July 2024 also reflected robust activity, ranking fourth with a total of 195,909 passengers, including 100,767 arrivals and 95,142 departures.

“In comparison, August 2023 recorded 191,507 international passengers, averaging 6,177 per day, demonstrating a notable year-on-year increase in traffic,” Luggya noted.

Additionally, Luggya said that the airport also handled significant cargo traffic in August 2024, processing 3,525 metric tons of exports and 1,885 metric tons of imports, totaling 5,410 metric tons.

“This cargo capacity further establishes the airport as a vital player in the region’s logistics and trade,” he said.

According to Luggya, as air travel continues to rebound globally, Entebbe International Airport is poised to maintain its upward trajectory, contributing to Uganda’s economic growth and connectivity to the world.
